Name: Raven
Series: Teen Titans (Animated Series)
Age: About 16-17ish--later Teens
Timeline: From Mid-Season 4, post “The Prophecy” (episode 46). Thus, in her timeline--she has been revealed as the ‘gem’ of the prophecy that will allow Trigon to invade the world, but has not yet had any of the events related to that, happen.
If you'd rather just read the wiki-page, go here.
Raven was born on Azerath, an alternate dimension, to Arella Roth (a human woman who fled there) and Trigon (a satan-like demon, not present at her birth). She was raised by the monks on Azerath to control her emotions, which control her powers, because of her heritage. There was also a prophecy given at her birth, that she would become the portal to allow Trigon to come to Earth and bring about the End of the World. Staying on Azerath for most of her life, it’s unclear when she came to Earth, but when she did, she came to Jump City, where she eventually met the other heroes who would form the Teen Titans.
This first encounter involved tracking down an escaped alien (Starfire), stopping her misguided destruction of buildings and cars, and then helping defeat the Gordanians who came to retrieve said-alien, and threatened Earth with a particle weapon. Raven was unsure the other 3-4 teens would accept her, as she was ‘creepy’ but she was also the one who first suggested fighting wasn’t the answer, to calming down and dealing with the confused and threatened Starfire.
Since then, she has been one of the founding Teen Titans, fighting with the 5 against Slade, dealing with Terra’s betrayal, and working with Titans East and fighting Brother Blood. Per Terra’s acceptance and betrayal, there were hard times between her and Raven. Raven had a premonition, when first meeting Terra, but wasn’t sure what it meant. She was also skeptical of Terra’s sudden return and sudden control of her powers, when Raven practices daily to control hers. Eventually she did come to honestly trust the other girl, which made her betrayal hurt all the more.
Raven has also had her body switched with Starfire (and vice versa), having to learn how to deal with the Tameranian’s powers which are fueled by letting your emotions go--the opposite of how she herself deals with her powers. This incident did lead to a greater understanding of each other between the two girls, and their friendship has been strengthened since.
She has spent years fighting with the Titans and has become closer to her team-mates, considering them her closest friends and family. She has become closer to Beast Boy and to Cyborg, after they found a portal into her mind, and glimpsed some of what haunts her. She also has a bond with Robin, from when he suffered the effects of an extremely hallucinogenic drug left on Slade’s mask; involving her being in his mind--and she seeing through his eyes, to see if it was real or not.
Eventually, her past caught up with her, as Slade returned from the dead, as Trigon’s messenger, first appearing on Raven’s birthday. He delivered her a message from her father, that the prophecy will come to pass, marking her, and reminding her she can not escape destiny. Raven became increasingly determined to find a way to prevent it though, while trying to keep what was to happen from her friends. Slade returned again, preparing for what was to come, and threatened to tell the other titans what was to come, if Raven didn’t.
Fleeing to Azerath, Raven sought out Arella to try and find some way, any way to change her fate--as the monks on Azerath were the ones who originally sealed him away. She returned from Azerath, fully marked as the ‘gem’ that would open the portal for Trigon, and delivered quite the butt-kicking to Slade, angry and upset but determined. She stopped when the villain pointed out she was scaring her friends. After that, back at the Tower, she informed them that something bad was coming, and there was no way to stop it. They vowed to try anyways.
That would be the point I would pull her in from. Season 4, post “The Prophecy”.
Raven is fairly calm, and often the voice of reason in the group, with a deadpan wit and sarcastic tone. She’s fairly withdrawn, often seen reading or holding herself apart from the others while meditating. This is due to the emotional control she must keep over her powers, meaning she does not express herself easily. It doesn’t mean she CAN’T express herself, as she is found several times smiling, or showing annoyance--simply that she has to be careful.
She also does care and feel very deeply for her friends, helping them when they are having trouble (like helping Cyborg with his car), and seems to be the level-headed counselor to the others. She’s often lonely, and worried that she is ‘creepy’ though, sometimes not sure what to do when the others reach out, and whether she should reach back. She has formed bonds slowly, but surely, with her various team-mates.
She knows she’s destined to help bring about the demon who’ll usher in the apocalypse, and she tries to fight against her own despair this brings her. She does her best to be the ‘hero’ and be good, to try and balance out this coming terror. Her friends are hopeful to stop it, she’s not so much--but she’ll try. And she wants, more than anything, to protect her friends. She’s worried deep inside that she is ‘half-evil’ and thus she tries to be a hero, and a good person.
She likes waffles (more than life itself), isn’t too fond of parties, likes herbal tea, and may or may not like Beast Boy’s jokes and think he’s funny. Her favorite color is blue. No one should ever go in her room...
Additional Note: Hooboy, Raven is often the ‘new powers as plot demands’ character, but here are the most common ones she exhibits, as well as one or two of the one-off-ones she had when under extreme duress.
Dark Energy: This is primarily what Raven uses, in fighting and manipulating her environment. It seems to be a form of magic, that manifests similarly to telekinesis--and may be linked to her soul-self, which is also formed from dark-energy. Visually, it is a transparent-black-with-white-outline over the object. It can be used also, on it’s own, to shield or ‘blast’ things, as well as manipulating objects and her environment.
Portals/Teleporting: Again with her dark-energy, Raven seems to be able to phase through walls and objects with a swirling dark-portal, as well as teleport via the same or using her soul-self. She’s been shown several times to be able to take at least one person with her as well.
Levitation: Raven levitates, allowing her to fly at high speeds and float. She’s commonly seen meditating in the lotus position, while levitating.
Empathy: Raven is an empath, meaning she can sense the emotions of others--she also seems to exhibit some minor healing, related to this ability, and can form a bond with another through this ability, allowing her to see through their eyes. (It is unclear in series if she can also ‘project’ emotions back, but since it’s a common empath trait I often have her do that as well--I’ll put up a permissions post for her Empathy, but most of the time I contact the mun in question for uses related to empathy.)
Being half-demonic, Raven seems to be somewhat tougher than average in her body, able to take a decent amount of damage. She also, sometimes, seems to shrink or grow in size depending on the situation--usually when she’s upset or when she’s about to deliver a beat-down.
Soul-Self and Astral Projection: Raven can manifest her ‘soul-self’, which seems to take one of two forms--either a dark-energy formed raven-bird, which can act like other dark energy constructs, or as a means of teleporting, and occasionally as a focus for other effects--or as a dark-energy variation of herself, which has been used at least once as an attack upon the mind of a villain. These seem to be forms of astral projection.
Multilingual: Raven is fluent in English, Latin, German, Romanian, Sanskrit and Ancient Sumerian
Magic: Raven has shown an aptitude for magic, and often uses a mantra “Azarath Metrion Zinthos” to help focus her own abilities. She has been shown to be capable of using and learning other spells, and while she can use her abilities without speaking her mantra, speaking it often helps her with her control.
One-off/Special/Rare-abilities: These are ones that have happened under great duress, or been seen once or twice--mostly when Raven has lost her temper, or been scared. When she lost her temper, she gained red eyes (occasionally she has 4, like her father), and gains a very scary aura and voice; when this was shown in the series (Nevermore), she used dark energy tendrils to pull Dr. Light under her cloak, while looming up to be several feet higher and taller. It’s not clear what happened to him, but...he was terrified, drained of color, and mentioned it being ‘so cold’... When she has been scared (both when denying she was afraid, and when Slade first hunted her down to deliver her a message from her father), she has shown a variation on her powers losing control. In the first case, she lost her powers until she admitted she was afraid, turning the Tower into a haunted house based on a movie-monster, as manifestations of her abilities (Fear Itself). In the second (Birthmark), she was shown to freeze time in the city, although it didn’t affect Slade, and she later freed Robin, as she tried to escape.
Generally, I try to be very easy to talk to and deal with, and while Raven CAN be incredibly powerful, she’s also dependent on her being IN control of her emotions, to harness things fully.
Constructive Criticism, also known as "How's my driving?" can be left here as well, in the comments. Please be polite, is all I ask.
--Raven isn't fond of chickens, finding them to be a nuisance. She's allergic to their feathers. [Actual canon]
--Raven also knits on occasion.[Actual canon]
--Raven hates clowns [Actual canon]
--Despite numerous references (like "nevermore" being the name of her fractured-soul-head-space), Raven is not actually a fan of Edgar Allen Poe. She respects the contributions he made to literature and the world, and things he wrote, but she's not a fan herself. Quote him to her at your own risk.
OOC--Backtagging good, thread-hopping good, Fourth-walling please discuss but allowed within reason.
IC
Hugging this character: Go ahead, but she'll be very awkward.
Kissing this character: See Above, and add potential emotional-spike+power-caused destruction.
Flirting with this character: See Above, and potential suspicion/awkward-not-sure-how-to-handle-it-ness.
Fighting with this character: Yep, she's a freelance superheroine--she won't start a fight, but she'll definitely defend and help finish them.
Injuring this character (include limits and severity): With prior permission and please discuss with me. I promise I don't bite.
Killing this character: See above.
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Feel free, but she has her own abilities. Never hurts to ask though.
Empathy Raven is an empath, which is like a telepath but for emotions. She needs to maintain control over her own emotions to properly wield her own powers and she respects privacy. (She most definitely wants HER OWN privacy respected as well.)
That said, she keeps a very slight passive-awareness of the emotional state of those around her (surface-level stuff) that she'd pick up. She's also likely able to sense someone who's not a sociopath in a lie, because their emotions won't match their words.
She herself comes across as tightly shielded and very tightly controlled.
But please, please, poke me or talk to me here or on Plurk if there's something she would not pick up on, or something she would, and you want it to be specific.
